What a difference a year makes. July 4 of last year is when I was put on bed-rest, marking the beginning of what Allan likes to call my “shut-in period.” I basically missed summer last year (and fall and most of winter — not easy to leave the house with twins), so am especially excited by all the fabulous weather and am trying to spend as much time as possible outside.
On Friday, we took a day trip to La Conner, which is a cute town just over an hour north of Seattle. It is set along a canal, near the tulip festival, and is home to the author Tom Robbins. On Saturday, we went to Allan’s colleague, Raj’s annual fourth of July party.
Raj has the perfect place for the party, with a roof deck overlooking Lake Union, where the fireworks originate. He continues to out do himself every year, and this was an especially impressive party — complete with catering by one of our favorite restaurants, stuffed animals for all the kids, and sparklers for the older kids. However, the girls thought that the best part of the party was the beer cooler. Like at the open house a few weekends ago, they planted themselves at the cooler for much of the party. Hmmm, we’re beginning to sense a trend . . .
Lydia and Hadley didn’t quite make it for the fireworks, but were quite a hit at the party with the adorable red and blue striped seersucker sailor dresses that their Grandma Judy made. The dresses also had really cute matching hats, but the girls were afraid they’d mess up their hair and so politely declined to wear them to the party.
We also harvested our fruit crop this weekend. We have two sour cherry trees and four blueberry bushes that all produce tons of fruit (in addition to apple trees and new raspberry bush). Allan made two cherry pies and I made blueberry muffins. I think the cherries are done for the season, but we should have lots more blueberries and hopefully some raspberries as well.

I absolutely adore those dresses…and fun hats, though I see they’ve clearly outgrown the funny hat stage.
